RB Leipzig sack Tedesco after Champions League home debacle

RB Leipzig parted ways with coach Domenico Tedesco on Wednesday after a poor start to the Bundesliga and a 4-1 home defeat by Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Shakhtar arrived in Leipzig with a weakened squad after most foreign players lost following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but the team found four of their five shots on goal.

Tedesco took over in December last year and helped them climb from 11th to fourth and a place in the Champions League. He also led her to the German Cup, her first major trophy.

But the side have managed just one win in their five league games in the Bundesliga, including a 4-0 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt last week.

“After our mediocre start to the Bundesliga season with five points from five games and the recent defeats against Eintracht and Shakhtar, we think a change of leadership is the right way to get things rolling again quickly,” said club managing director Oliver Mintzlaff said in a statement.

Leipzig play Borussia Dortmund, joint leaders in the league with Freiburg, on Saturday before going to Real Madrid next Wednesday.
