Redshirt senior QB Ben Bryant to start for No. 23 Cincinnati Bearcats against No. 19 Arkansas Razorbacks, sources say

No. 23 Cincinnati is starting redshirt senior Ben Bryant as quarterback at No. 19 Arkansas today, sources told ESPN.

The game takes place at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Bryant began his career at Cincinnati, where he assisted Desmond Ridder for three seasons. He then moved to Eastern Michigan, where he starred last year, and then returned to Cincinnati to compete for the starting job this season.

Bryant beat Evan Prater, a redshirt sophomore who is one of the most respected recruits in Cincinnati history. Prater was an ESPN 300 recruit in the Class of 2020.

The choice of Bryant, who is 6ft 3 and weighs 220 pounds, also projects a new style for Cincinnati. Offensive coordinator Gino Guidugli, who is in his second year as a Bearcats playcaller, will officiate a game with a quarterback who’s more of a serious pocket passer.

Bryant threw for 3,121 yards in east Michigan last year. He’s not a double threat quarterback, so the notion of drafted running plays is essentially removed from the Bearcat offense.

Expect the Bearcats to lean more into a Smashmouth identity, which should include 12-plus staffers. Cincinnati has one of the best tight-end tandems in the country with 6-7 Josh Whyle and 255-pound Leonard Taylor.

The Bearcats bring a 20-game winning streak to Arkansas in the regular season; It’s one of the most fascinating games since the Bearcats had a school-record nine players drafted into the NFL last spring.
