As Halloween approaches, movie fans seem to be awash with choices. Nevertheless, we regularly return to the classics or aimlessly scroll through the abundance of live-action releases on our countless subscription platforms. Well, scroll no more because there’s a must-watch breath of fresh air on Netflix this Halloween.
Wendel and Wild began life as an unpublished book by Heinrich Seilick and Clay McLeod Chapman and was later adapted into a screenplay by Selick and a modern horror maestro Jordan Peele. Peele has a great history of horror that dates back to his directorial debut Go out which has gone down in recent history as one of the great horror films. Selick isn’t a wimp either, because his most recent excursion, albeit 13 years ago, was as a director coralthe fan-favorite stop-motion horror film.
Fans of Selick had to wait a long time for him to direct again, despite having a sequel coral in production, which was discontinued in 2012. With that in mind, the film is certainly in safe hands, as Selick’s chilling stop-motion experience blends perfectly with Peele’s background in both horror and comedy. For many fans, this will be the show stealer of this year’s Halloween releases. So given the hype surrounding the film, it makes perfect sense to provide a comprehensive summary of what we exactly know about Wendel and Wild… until now.
Editor’s Note: This article was updated on October 17th to include the latest trailers.
What is Wendell and Wild about?
Wendel and Wild occupies a cross-genre niche and has been described as a stop motion fantasy horror comedy. On the one hand, that gives him little competition in this year’s scary season, but on the other, it puts a lot of weight on his shoulders to carry the torch for such a specific genre-bending film. Animation has long been a successful style of filmmaking, but a strong storyline is an integral part of the success of such films. The combination of the previous two points would indicate how important the narrative will be Wendel and Wild.
The film sees both Wendell (Keegan-Michael Key) and Wild (Jordan Peele) as demon brothers who seek to summon themselves to the land of the living, a comedic twist on the “land of the dead.” They must defeat their ultimate enemy in the form of Sister Helley (Angela Bassett) who is a demon-smashing nun, just the kind of nun two demon brothers wouldn’t get along with. Along the way, they recruit 13-year-old Kat Elliot (Poetry Ross) into their adventure, and great fun ensues. The exact plot details are few and far between at this point, but that’s not stopping fans from being excited by the information we have that promises a fun comedy/horror quirk.
With a few teasers Since the film has already been released, we have an idea of what the show will be like. There are shades of coral, Henry Selick’s final film, with the animation proving to be the kind of high-quality horror we’ve come to love over the course of the genre’s relationship with animation. We also get a brief preview of the plot, with 13-year-old Kat Elliot, previously mentioned in a clip, opening a drawer and discovering an evil teddy bear. It already seems like a lot of fun, potentially suitable for family viewing, and the excitement following the trailer is undoubtedly palpable.
The first full teaser trailer for Wendel & Wild was released by Netflix on September 6, 2022, and gives us just a sneak peek at the story and spooky vibes of Selick’s latest stop-motion project.
The full trailer for Wendel & Wild was revealed on October 10, 2022 and offers an even clearer look at the film, including Angela Bassett’s sister Helley and an undead priest voiced by James Hong.
Who is in the cast of Wendell and Wild?
Writer Jordan Peele (Go out) also stars as Wild in the film, along with Keegan-Michael Key (Keanu) as a helix. The two are famous as doppelgangers Key and Peele, with their on-screen and off-screen chemistry sure to lead to success in this film. As mentioned above, Lyric Ross (This is us) plays Kat and Angela Bassett (Black Panther) plays Sister Helley, with a strong ensemble cast rounded out by many big names including the likes James Hong (Kung Fu Panda) and Tamara Smart (A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting). Although there are many great additions to the cast of Wendel and Wildit’s without a doubt the dual roles of Key and Peele that fans are particularly excited to see return with their comedy series key and peele late 2015.
When is Wendell and Wild coming out?
Wendel and Wild premiered on 47 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2022, which will likely bring us further news and reactions after the event. After that, fans just have to wait just over a month to see the filmwith a select theatrical release date of October 21, 2022, followed by a full release on Netflix just seven days later on October 28, 2022. With Jordan Peele in particular having such a great relationship with the streaming platform, it’s no surprise that Netflix is like that involved in the project.
More to see while waiting for Wendell and Wild
With Wendel and Wild Being such a seasonally appropriate film, it’s relatively easy to find great films to watch while waiting for its release. Halloween always offers a lot of great new releases the horror genre, but this film will stand out within the animation genre.
The obvious first choice to check out while you wait Wendel and Wild is coral, Henry Selick’s latest film. Already published in 2009, coral follows the eponymous 11-year-old girl played by Dakota Fanning When she stumbles across another world similar to her own, only this one has a dark and suspicious twist. The film received critical acclaim from both fans and critics alike and uses the same stop-motion style animation that promises to be such a hit Wendel and Wild.
Another option would be Jordan Peele’s directorial debut. Though a more mature choice, Go out is still considered one of the greatest achievements of modern horror. The film follows Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluya) when he finally travels to the country to meet the family of his new girlfriend (Alison Williams). However, family is not all it seems. Despite many horror tropes, Go out revolutionized the genre and even includes a “typical Jordan Peele” dash of comedy that fans are raving about Wendel and Wild certainly expect from the forthcoming release. Go out offers a glimpse through Peele’s horror lens and is sure to have anyone who has seen it more excited than ever for what’s to come Wendel and Wild. For more directing work from Peele, see his latest film nope.
