Respect for Marriage Act: These 36 Republican senators voted against landmark bill to protect same-sex marriage

SAN FRANCISCO– Let’s start with the positive: Republicans and Democrats are working together. This time it’s about protecting same-sex marriage in the Supreme Court.

The Respect for Marriage Act codifies marriages and came amid Democrats’ fears that the same conservative majority on the Supreme Court that abolished abortion rights will target same-sex marriage in the future.

The version, which overcame a Senate filibuster, passed the Senate Tuesday by a vote of 61 to 36. A dozen Republican senators from across the country voted with Democrats before Thanksgiving to limit debate and move to a final vote.

The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for final approval before President Joe Biden can sign it into law, which he will do “immediately and proudly.”
