Right Said Fred goes off on Beyoncé for using ‘I’m Too Sexy’

The brothers who make up Right Said Fred are upset with Beyoncé, who they say didn’t ask permission before using the tune from her biggest hit “I’m Too Sexy” in her song “Alien Superstar.”

“Usually the artist comes up to us,” the duo told the Sun on Monday at the BMI London Awards 2022, “but Beyoncé didn’t do it because she’s such an arrogant person that she probably just thought, ‘Come on get me’ so we heard about it afterwards when you did it.

Brothers Fred Fairbrass and Richard Fairbrass – who were either speaking together to the British news agency or were indistinguishable from one another in the reporter’s eyes – said the likes of Drake and Taylor Swift came up to them to ask for an ok before the rehearsal Song or interpolation (where the new artist re-records the melody of the original artist’s song and uses that in the new composition).

Swift used the tune on her 2017 track “Look What You Made Me Do” from Reputation. Drake sampled the tune and used the tune for his song “Way 2 Sexy” featuring Future and Young Thug from Certified Lover Boy by 2021 interpolated.

“To use our tune they need our permission so send us the demo and we approve it and if so we get a co-write credit. There’s 22 writers on this Beyoncé thing, it’s ridiculous, so we’d get like 40p [about 45 cents],” Said.

The Fairbrass brothers are two of the 24 people credited with writing Alien Superstar, according to Billboard. Robert Francis Anthony Manzoli, the duo’s third I’m Too Sexy songwriter and guitarist, is also on the list.

The other writers of Alien Superstar are Beyoncé, Honey Redmond, Christopher Lawrence Penny, Luke Francis Matthew Solomon, Denisia “@blu_june” Andrews and Brittany “@chi_coney” Coney from Nova Wav, S. Carter, David Debrandon Brown, Dave Hamelin , Timothy Lee McKenzie, Danielle Balbuena, Rami Yacoub, Leven Kali, Atia Boggs p/k/a/Ink, Levar Coppin, Saliou Diagné, Mike Dean, John Michael Holiday, the late Barbara Ann Teer, Kim Cooper and Peter Rauhofer .

“We can’t stop it,” they said of the “Renaissance” singer with her tune. “There’s nothing we can do. … You’re going to get into a conversation with someone who has a lot more presence and power and money than we do. And that’s not going to go well.

“Best let it be,” said the duo. “If you’re not careful, you’ll spend your life looking back.”

For what it’s worth, songwriter-guitarist Manzoli seems less upset about his one-hit-wonder song being used on Queen Bey’s latest album.

“Drake just had a blast with his cover; ‘Way Too Sexy’, like Taylor Swift did a few years ago (with her song ‘Look What You Made Me Do’) and so did Beyoncé!” he wrote on his SoundBetter profile page. “This song has been number one in the US three times now!!”
