Rivian opens its first three ‘Adventure Network’ fast charging sites

When Rivian drivers finally hit the road, they’ll have a choice of charging networks, including a brand new one from the EV truck maker itself. Rivian announced Monday that the first three locations of its burgeoning “Adventure Network” will be powered by Level 3 fast chargers will come online and be accessible to almost every other electric vehicle on the road, regardless of who makes it.

The first station opened in Salida, Colorado, with four chargers capable of delivering 200kW of power — that’s about 140 miles of range for an R1T in 20 minutes — in addition to the existing Level 2 chargers. Rivian will officially open the other stations in Inyokern and Bishop, California later in the week.

Unless you frequently visit Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Forest, Mammoth Lakes, or Death Valley National Park, you’ve probably never heard of any of these cities. Similar to Jeep’s efforts to install charging stations at trailheads, Rivian’s Adventure Network is trying to add fast-charging options along popular cross-country routes as well as near national parks and other remote locations.

“We developed Rivian Charging to support electrified adventures, and these initial locations demonstrate how we are enabling riders to responsibly access some of the country’s most breathtaking natural spaces,” said Trent Warnke, senior director of energy and charging solutions at Rivian. in a statement. “In addition to scenic or remote destinations, our fast-charging system is designed to ensure travelers have charging options along major coast-to-coast transport corridors.” To that end, the company hopes to install around 3,500 chargers at 600 locations across the country.
