R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison on 9 state charges including sex crimes and human trafficking. The singer was in federal court in Brooklyn on Wednesday when Judge Ann M. Donnelly returned the verdict.
Kelly knew he could live 10 years since he was convicted on all 9 counts last September and declined to testify during his sentencing. Federal prosecutors had recommended no less than 25 years in prison because of the seriousness of his crimes.
R. Kelly sentenced to 30 years in prison for federal sex crimes
The trial lasted just over a month and his lawyers were no match for the court. His legal team called in a handful of former Kelly employees and associates, all of whom said under oath that they had never seen him molest anyone. However, prosecutors put dozens of witnesses on the stand who claimed otherwise.
Kelly himself never took a position during the trial.
One of Kelly’s victims, Lizzette Martinez, said he deserved a life sentence and claims he has proven on numerous occasions that he used his power to get what he wants and should never have the chance to exploit women again .
It’s not for Kelly either, as he has another federal case from Illinois as well as a state trial in Minnesota.
With the conviction of Ghislaine Maxwell, it’s been a big week for sex trafficking convictions and we hope everyone else who has ever been involved in these acts will face their judgment too.
