Roe V. Wade Overturned Shocker: Why Are Rape And Incest The Focus?

Roe v. Wade was toppled in shocking action this morning. However, what most people may not understand is that this is not a ban. While the United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) overturned the ruling, that just means it goes back to the states, which for a large majority means abortion will continue to be available, albeit some with more restrictions.

Something I’ve seen a lot today is the arguments about rape and incest and how abortions are necessary for those events. While I agree that rape and incest should be absolutely certain in making people choose abortion, I’ve wondered how big a problem it is.

Roe V. Wade: Why is rape and incest the focus? – account for only 1% of all abortions

After doing some research, I found an article from USA Today (not really a right-wing conspiracy site) and according to the Guttmacher Institute, only 1% of women have abortions because they got pregnant through rape, while less than 0.5% do this because of incest.

I found this very interesting as we hear about these particular situations so often, but really a large majority of abortions are due to other reasons. The largest study was conducted by Finer and colleagues on the reasons women want abortions, using data from a 2004 survey and comparing data from a 1987 study. According to the study,

“The three main rationale categories cited in both studies were: 1) “Having a baby would change my life dramatically” (i.e., affect education, employment, and ability to care for existing children and other dependents) (74% in 2004 and 78% in 1987), 2) “I can’t afford a baby now” (e.g., unmarried, student, cannot afford child care or basic needs) (73% in 2004 and 69 % in 1987) and 3) “I don’t want to be a single mother or have relationship problems” (48% in 2004 and 52% in 1987).”

Since the discussion of abortion with the removal of Roe v. Wade goes on, I think it’s important to understand the information and understand what’s going on. I found this information extremely interesting as it kind of shatters one of the biggest talking points about abortion.
