Roe vs. Wade: Michelle Obama and Hollywood slam decision

Collective outrage, sighs and outcry swept social media on Friday after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade, ending federal abortion protections that the landmark 1973 case afforded women and pregnant women for decades.

Oscar winner Viola Davis said she was “eviscerated”. Actress Jessica Biel was “angry”. Alyssa Milano called it “a sad day for America”. And Ariana DeBose was speechless after Friday’s decision, which will effectively give states the power to enforce their own abortion laws.

Others, such as “Avengers” star Mark Ruffalo, actor Rob Reiner, director Elizabeth Banks and former first lady Michelle Obama used the historic turning point as a call to “keep fighting” and rallying support for reproductive health organizations, including Planned Parenthood and the United States of Women.

While conservative lawmakers and pro-life supporters applauded the decision, Obama, who was among the many liberal politicians to oppose the ruling, said on Friday that she was “heartbroken” by the “terrible decision” that was made lead to “devastating consequences”.

“So yes, I’m heartbroken – for the teenage girl, full of panache and promise, who won’t be able to finish school or live the life she wants because her condition controls her reproductive choices; for the mother of a non-viable pregnancy who must now carry that pregnancy to term; for the parents who watch their child’s future unravel before their eyes; for the healthcare workers who can no longer help them without risking jail time,” she wrote in a statement released on social media.

Obama urged readers to see the reversal as a “wake-up call, especially for the young who will carry their burdens.”

“I know this is not the future you chose for your generation – but if you give up now, you will inherit a country that bears no resemblance to you or any of the values you believe in,” she said. “This moment is difficult, but our story doesn’t end here. It may feel like there’s not much we can do right now, but we can. And we have to.”
