Russia Uses Mercenaries to Project Power Far From Its Troubles in Ukraine

MALI-MAURITANIA BORDER — Leaders of the Malian junta gathered at Bamako airport earlier this month to hail the latest shipment from their new benefactor: the Kremlin.

A line of attack aircraft, including Russian jet fighters and attack helicopters, lined up at the north end of the runway to send them to the front lines of a decades-long war against jihadists, footage of the ceremony on Malian state television shows. At the southern end, out of sight, was the growing base of the Wagner Group, the Kremlin-affiliated military company that has dispatched some 1,000 mercenaries to Mali in exchange for cash and the potential for lucrative mining concessions.
