Ryder Cup – Luke Donald named as Team Europe captain

England’s Luke Donald was named captain of the 2023 European Ryder Cup on Monday, replacing Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, who was stripped of his captaincy after joining the new LIV Golf Invitational Series.

Donald, who has been part of four European winning teams as a player, will lead the team at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club outside Rome from September 25th to October 19th. 1, 2023.

“I am incredibly proud to have been named European Ryder Cup Captain for 2023,” Donald said in a statement. “It is truly one of the greatest honors a golfer can have, to lead a team of his own kind and to be an ambassador for an entire continent. I feel extremely privileged to have been given this responsibility and I do not take this responsibility lightly.”

Stenson was removed as Ryder Cup captain after signing with LIV Golf on July 20. Stenson won the third LIV Golf event at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey last weekend. He collected more than $4 million in prize money.

“I think we can all agree that I played like a captain,” Stenson said during Sunday’s LIV Golf broadcast after finishing with 11-202.

Donald, 44, was world No. 1 for 56 weeks from May 2011. The former Northwestern star has won five times on the PGA Tour, most recently in 2012, and seven times on the European Tour.

Denmark’s Thomas Björn and Italy’s Edoardo Molinari will serve as Donald’s vice-captains in Rome. Zach Johnson becomes captain of the American team.

“Some of my best golfing experiences have come at the Ryder Cup and I wouldn’t trade them for anything,” said Donald. “It’s an event like no other and I can’t wait to create more special memories in Italy next year. I love everything the Ryder Cup embodies, from the camaraderie and camaraderie of being part of a team, to the history of the competition, but most of all playing for something bigger than yourself.”

The US team won the 2021 Ryder Cup 19-9 in Whistling Straits, Wisconsin. It was the biggest Ryder Cup defeat since 1967.

Some of the most notable European players to have competed in Whistling Straits including Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Paul Casey and Ian Poulter have also joined LIV Golf.

“Luke is a former world number one who has an excellent Ryder Cup record so he undoubtedly has the credentials needed to be a successful European captain,” said European Ryder Cup director Guy Kinnings in a statement. “He is well respected by the players and the wider support team at Ryder Cup Europe who have already done a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes to give him a strong platform for the remaining 14 months before the game begins.”
