Saint Nicholas Eastern Orthodox Church members preparing for Pierogi Festival in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The Eastern Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Northern Liberties hosts a Pierogi Festival on November 5th and 6th.

They plan to sell around 16,000 pierogi this weekend.

In preparation, Church members along with Ukrainian refugees gathered on Saturday to make about 1,400 pierogi.

“We are happy to be here, happy to help the people who have come and needed help,” said Ihor Yavorskyy of Northeast Philadelphia.

“We cook and talk and enjoy our time,” said Yana Zapadnia, a Ukrainian refugee.

About 150 pounds of onions were also chopped up for another dish.

“This is Kapusta, it’s a Ukrainian sauerkraut. It’s a little sweeter, it’s not as bitter as we’re used to,” said Judith Hanney, the festival director.

The pierogies are stored in a freezer where they remain until they are sold next month. The money goes to the church and the Ukrainian refugees who take them in, like Yulia Bihun and her two-year-old daughter.

“These 11 people live together like one big family and it’s amazing,” said Bihun.

Bihun said she follows updates on the war in Ukraine closely.

The Ukrainian refugees said they would like to give something back to a church that has helped them so much.
