Salvation Army kicks off holiday Red Kettle campaign in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The Red Kettle Kickoff Festival was held at Love Park on Saturday afternoon to raise money for the Salvation Army.

Major Tawny Cowen-Zanders, the Salvation Army’s Philadelphia area divisional secretary, said the Salvation Army’s red kettle bell season was specifically held at Love Park.

“When you think of Philadelphia, you think of Love Park and really, we like to think our red kettles are about love too. Every dollar, every quarter, every dime that goes into it, these acts of love are being given to those who are going through tough times and just need a little extra help,” Cowen-Zanders said.

The iconic red kettle has been a symbol for over 150 years, according to the Salvation Army. He represents the community that helps meet the needs of those in need.

“It’s just nice to be able to do this, and I’m lucky with my life, so giving back a little of that happiness to others is always something I grew up to be,” said Michael Roberts of Hamilton Township, New Jersey.

The Salvation Army says this is their most famous street campaign.

“It feels great to give to The Salvation Army, they do so much good for so many people in need, and now more than ever the world needs more people like Salvation Army volunteers,” said Trish Kelley, a Philadelphia native of Boston visited .

Volunteers will stand outside the stores and ring the bell for cash or check donations during the holiday season.

“When we receive the money, it goes to our red cauldron. I often tell people that they might think they’re giving us a little change, but there’s a lot of change coming out of that red pot,” said Cowen-Zander.

Ayanna Pratt has to ring the bell. She said it makes her happy. Her grandma took photos to remember the time of giving.

“It feels good to help,” said Tanya Phillips of Somerdale, New Jersey.
