San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. suspended 80 games for PED violation

San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. has been suspended for 80 games after testing positive for clostebol, a performance-enhancing substance that violates Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Tatis’ suspension, announced by MLB on Friday, is effective immediately.

“We were surprised and extremely disappointed to learn today that Fernando Tatis Jr. tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Prevention and Treatment Program and was subsequently suspended for 80 games without pay,” they said Padre’s statement. “We fully support the program and hope Fernando will learn from this experience.”

Tatis, 23, is one of the biggest stars in Major League Baseball, the centerpiece of several marketing campaigns, and is in the second season of a 14-year, $340 million contract.

Not only could the suspension end his year before it began – Tatis is currently on a minor league rehabilitation stint after missing the first four months of the season with a broken left wrist – each PED discipline comes with a postseason ban on the announced season.

After rising to stardom in his rookie season at 20, Tatis, a 6ft 3, 220lb shortstop whose strength, speed and penchant for the spectacular earned him legions of fans, finished fourth in the 2020 MVP pick of the National League Last year he did even better when he signed the record deal, finished third in MVP voting and cemented himself as one of the best players in the game.

The Padres collapsed on the track but had high hopes for 2022 after hiring Bob Melvin as their new manager. During the lockout that delayed spring training, Tatis broke his wrist in a motorcycle accident that required surgery. San Diego vowed to take its rehabilitation slow and was anticipating a lineup that would see Tatis at the top, new signing Juan Soto hit second and third baseman Manny Machado at third.

Tatis’ contract remains fully guaranteed for the next 12 seasons, during which he is owed $324 million. Tatis has a full no-trade clause until 2028. In 273 career games, Tatis has hit .292/.369/.569 with 81 home runs, 192 RBIs and 52 stolen bases.
