San Francisco 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo to soon begin throwing after offseason shoulder surgery, source says

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s throwing schedule remains on schedule following offseason shoulder surgery, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Saturday.

The expectation was that Garoppolo, who had the procedure on his right shoulder in March, will throw the next few weeks after his release and that plan remains in place.

Once that happens and Garoppolo can pass an investigation, the trading market could heat up for him.

Trey Lance has worked as the 49ers’ starting quarterback during the offseason program, while Garoppolo, who has been the Niners’ starting quarterback since the late 2017 season, has spent most of his offseason rehab in Southern California.

Garoppolo was excused from the team’s mandatory mini-camp in early June after not participating in the team’s off-season training program. Veteran Nate Sudfeld was the team’s No. 2 quarterback behind Lance in OTAs with rookie Brock Purdy at No. 3.

Garoppolo is entering the final season of his contract and is scheduled to count $26.95 million toward the 2022 salary cap. That deal included a no-trade clause for the 2021 season only, and the 49ers have the right to sell him to any team of their choice if they so choose.

An acquiring team would take a salary of $24.2 million acting for Garoppolo now, but that salary isn’t guaranteed and interested teams could potentially work with him on a contract extension that could exchange the salary figure for guarantees lowers.

ESPN’s Nick Wagoner and Dan Graziano contributed to this report.
