Santa Clarita landslide damages six homes, forces evacuations

Six homes in Santa Clarita have been evacuated after they were damaged by a collapsing hill in a housing development, authorities said.
The “slope collapse” occurred on Plume Way around 2 p.m. Sunday when about eight feet of backyards behind homes in the Tri Pointe Homes development slid down into homes in the Canyon Country neighborhood, said Carrie Lujan, a city spokeswoman. Nobody was injured.

The six affected apartments have been marked yellow by a city building inspector, meaning residents can still enter their homes but cannot sleep there.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department monitored the slope through the night Sunday into Monday, but no other slips were observed, Lujan said.
“The developer of the project is working with their geotechnical engineer to complete the repairs and once they have mitigated the problem, the city will do everything possible to expedite inspections and permits to get residents home as safely and quickly as possible.” bring,” said Lujan.
The developer said the “landslide” was due to the “series of heavy rains” that hit California recently, according to a statement provided to KCBS-TV Channel 2.
“We are working with affected homeowners, including covering their interim housing costs, while a rehabilitation plan is developed to stabilize and rebuild the slope,” Tri Pointe Homes said in the statement. “Currently there don’t seem to be any problems on other slopes in the Skyline community. However, we will continue to monitor the situation closely under the guidance of geotechnical experts.”
