“Saved a campaign that could have been much worse”

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez believes winning second place in La Liga helped “save” a season that could have turned out much worse.

With only one tournament game to begin with, Blaugrana will end the campaign from 2021 to 22 without any silverware. They left the Copa del Rey in the round of 16 and the Spanish Super Cup in the semi-finals. Xavi’s team also failed to make it past the group stage in the UEFA Champions League and fell into the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League.

However, the club have shown signs of development since Xavi took over again in November 2021. From risking missing out on European spots altogether, they secured second place in the Premier League. tournament despite being lagged in other leagues.

Finishing as runners-up in the tournament confirmed Barcelona’s place in the group stage of the Champions League and the Spanish Super Cup for next season. Xavi believes that is the main goal of the team after their failures in other competitions, stating (as quoted by Barca Universal):

“Today we won second place in La Liga. For me, we have achieved the goal of this season by qualifying for the Champions League and the Spanish Super Cup.”

“Next season we could be in the Super Cup.” – Xavi in Barça’s goals

The Spaniard added:

“We were not able to compete with Real Madrid in La Liga. We were unable to compete in the rest of the competitions… With this second place finish, we saved a campaign that could have been much worse.”

The Catalan side have enjoyed 20 wins and 7 draws in 36 matches in all competitions under Xavi.

Barcelona drew La Liga’s penultimate match against Getafe

Xavi’s comments come after Barcelona’s goalless draw with Getafe in La Liga’s 37th match last night (May 15). The results at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, combined with Sevilla’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid, confirm that Blaugrana will only finish after Real Madrid.

In 37 matches, they have won 73 points, 12 points behind Los Blancos. They are also 5 points ahead of the third ranked team Atletico.

Getafe looked the better against a slightly altered Barcelona team who managed to get just one shot on target all night. The end result is also ideal for the hosts, as they have secured their spot in the top flight for at least another season.

They will now end their season with Elche on May 22nd, while Blaugrana to Villarreal on the same day.
