School meal prices increasing in Rutherford County

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn (WKRN) – Rutherford County Schools announced new breakfast and lunch prices for the 2022-2023 school year. The district reported that the rise in food prices is partly caused by the end of the federal program and food price inflation.

Schools have been offering free breakfast and lunch during the pandemic as part of a federal program run by the United Kingdom Department of Agriculture, according to an RCS publication.

The USDA Seamless Summer Program ends in August.

Meals in Rutherford County Schools can still be purchased for teachers and guests, but at a price increase similar to that for students.

From August 2022 the following prices apply for meals:

  • Student Breakfast Rate – $2.00 for all levels
  • Lunch price for students – $3.25 elementary school and $3.50 middle and high school
  • Teachers/Guests – $2.50 breakfast and $4.25 lunch

In a press release, RCS Assistant Superintendent of Budget and Finance Doug Bodary said, “The increase in food prices is largely due to the dramatically increased cost of food, food preparation and labor costs that we are all seeing.”

“Parents will want to work with their student’s school, even if they think they may not qualify for a free and discounted lunch, and make an application,” Bodary added.

Once an application is submitted, parents will receive a notification letter from their child’s cafeteria manager to let them know if the application has been approved. The processing of the online application can take up to 10 working days.

Families are encouraged to apply. Click here to learn more.

In March 2022, nearly 30% of all RCS students were served breakfast and 60% of all students attended lunch, which RCS reported as a dramatic increase compared to the 2019-2020 school year. According to Bodary, this is the first meal price adjustment since the start of the 2019-2020 school year.
