ST. LOUIS — Three people were killed in a shooting at a St. Louis high school Monday morning, including the suspected shooter.
According to interim St. Louis Police Chief Mike Sack, a teenage girl was pronounced dead at the scene and an adult woman was pronounced dead at a local hospital. He did not provide details of the suspected gunman, who is believed to have died in a shootout with police.
A total of eight people were taken to local hospitals, Chief Sack said. It was not immediately clear if this figure included any of the deceased.
Saint Louis public schools initially said two students were injured in the incident.
Police were at the scene at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School just after 9:45 a.m., the school district said.
“The shooter was quickly stopped by police inside the CVPA. We have reports of two injured students who are on their way to the hospital,” officials said.

St. Louis police confirmed in a tweet just before 10 a.m. that the suspect was in custody. A source said the suspect was injured but the condition of the person was not immediately known.
All other injuries could not have been gunshot wounds, the source said.
One student, 16-year-old Taniya Gholston, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch she was in a room when the gunman entered.
“All I heard was two shots and he came in with a gun,” Gholston said. “And I tried to run and I couldn’t run. Me and he made eye contact but I made it because his gun was jammed. But we saw blood on the floor.”
Both CVPA and Collegiate were in lockdown as a massive emergency response surrounded the school.
Students would still be evacuated from schools to safe locations before 10am and parents would be notified of where to pick up their students.
The population was asked to avoid the area.
Central Visual and Performing Arts High School is a magnet school specializing in visual arts, musical arts, and performing arts. The district’s website states that the school’s “educational program is designed to create a nurturing environment in which students receive a quality academic and artistic education that prepares them to succeed at the post-secondary level or to perform competently in the world of work.” “.
