City Hall sources confirmed late in the afternoon that the victim was a 57-year-old Scotsman, confirming previous local newspaper reports of his age and nationality.

The incident happened near the Diagonal Mar shopping center in Barcelona and near the Parc del Forum, where Pet Shop Boys were performing on the opening night of the Primavera Sound 2023 music festival on Wednesday.

The concert-goers had just left the concert when the unnamed man was struck down and died.

It was initially unclear whether he was among the concert visitors.

However, tram operators later told local press that he was going in the opposite direction as people leaving the festival site were going there.

An accompanying person, whose age and nationality are not yet known, was unharmed and received psychological care today.

Police investigations were ongoing last night and the company that operates the tram service provided video footage to assist investigators.

TRAM Barcelona said in a tweet today: “TRAM would like to extend its condolences to the family and friends of the man who died in the tragedy last night.”

The Foreign Office was asked for an opinion.
