PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Sports complex crews have been working around the clock to ensure fans can enjoy Game 3 of the World Series safely.
Additional safety protocols were implemented in and around the ballpark as thousands of fans arrived in South Philadelphia.
Sal DeAngelis, Phillies vice president of operations and security, said there’s the security you see and the security you don’t see.
“We have our own internal security at the stadium,” he said. “But we also work with the Philadelphia Police Department, the Pennsylvania State Police, the FBI, the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security, the list goes on and on.”
DeAngelis said preparing for the unexpected is at the heart of developing a safety plan, and as the stakes rise for the Phillies, so do the safety details.
“It started during the Division Series when we played the Braves. We improved every round and now we’re in the World Series. So we have partners from all over the country supporting our security efforts,” he said.
Neither the Phillies nor the Philadelphia Police are able to discuss specifics about those security measures, but DeAngelis says everything is coming together nicely for the game.
“I was at a security briefing this morning. There are no credible threats to Citizens Bank Park or the Phillies. We’re gonna have a great time. Halloween, playoff game, this place is gonna rock tonight,” he said.
We’ve also spoken to fans who have come to the postseason games so far and say that despite our reputation, Philadelphia sports fans have behaved.
“Everyone is cool. Everyone is having a good time, and let’s just get on with it. Go Phillies,” said Jason Harvitz of Clifton Heights.
“Although there is a lot going on, it feels very safe. In and out of town. Here to get into the airport, to leave the airport. Back and forth, it’s been great,” said Dan Ducker. a die-hard Phillies fan from Nashville, Tennessee.
Not to mention the little-known incentive for security forces to shine the national spotlight on Philadelphia.
“The great thing about these safety meetings is that they are all local. They’re all Phillies fans. So you want to be here. They want to help us and they want to see the Phillies win the World Series,” DeAngelis said.
Games 3, 4 and 5 will all take place at Citizens Bank Park.
