Red Bull racing star Sergio Perez took the checkered flag home at the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday and the new champion’s big win was thanks to good strategy, good driving and good performance music.

Perez, whose victory at Monaco marked the first time he has triumphed at the notoriously difficult circuit, says he draws on a very specific type of music to get himself going before a race. “My playlists are full of Latin and romantic music,” he said Rolling Stone, during a recent promotional tour for his new partnership with Patrón Tequila. “I have to admit it’s not what average people listen to to get going, but it’s what I listen to to get in my zone, calm and focused.”

Among his favorite artists: “I would name Luis Miguel, Alejandro Fernandez, [the Colombian band] Morat, Carlos Rivera and Diego Torres,” he shares. “Mainly Spanish language songs that connect me to my roots.”

Born and raised in Guadalajara, Perez’s roots also connect him to tequila, with his home state of Jalisco long credited as the birthplace of the blue agave spirit. The driver says hooking up with Patrón was a breeze when the tequila maker called. “As many people know, I am so proud of my country and my home in Guadalajara, and Patrón shares the same pride in our home state of Jalisco, Mexico,” he says. “Both Patrón and I value hard work, dedication to perfection and community, especially to celebrate the people of the great country of Mexico.”

The man known to fans as “Checo” says there are indeed many parallels between F1 racing and tequila. “Being successful in the world of Formula 1 is a lot like mastering the craft of tequila making,” he says dutifully. “It takes passion and tireless effort to achieve perfection. Just like the art of tequila production,” he adds, “racing is a team effort. Each plays a critical role, using their unique talents with meticulous precision to achieve the highest standard of quality in performance.”

The driver adds that both tequila making and auto racing require a lot of hands on deck. “At least 60 hands touch every single bottle of Patrón before it leaves the distillery,” he says, “[while] over 75 hands touch my car before I leave the pits and drive off. It’s important not to compromise quality for efficiency in both racing and tequila making.”

Aside from Formula 1 and tequila, Perez says he’s also a huge music fan and shares a memory of meeting one of his favorite artists a few years ago. “It was very cool to meet Enrique Iglesias a few years ago under very fun circumstances,” Checo recalls. “As a worldwide music star, he plays very often in F1 Grand Prix events and one of those years, I think it was 2016 in Baku, I contacted his management team and invited him to my garage to watch the race from there . And to my surprise,” Perez continues, “he replied that he had never been invited into an F1 garage before. So he came on race day, I showed him my car and we’ve become good friends ever since.”

The kicker: “In the end I ended up on the podium in this race,” says Perez, citing Iglesias as a lucky charm. “Now every time he plays an F1 event, I invite him to the garage and he invites me to his concerts.”

Perez’s win at Monaco marked his first podium finish this year and his third Formula 1 win overall. It was also his second win for Red Bull after taking the flag in Baku last year (his first win came in 2020 when he drove for the team then known as Racing Point). Checo is looking to repeat itself as champion in two weeks’ time in Baku when the drivers take to the track at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

At the moment, Perez is celebrating his Monaco win, presumably with a Patron. “The F1 schedule is very demanding and I have to be very focused. [so] If I can enjoy a patrón, it’s usually to celebrate the podium,” he says.

Mexican Pride adds that it’s always tequila season “when I’m relaxing and spending time with my family at home.” His drink of choice: a plain Patrón Silver & Soda, made with tequila, soda water, and fresh lime. “It’s light, refreshing and just one sip takes me home to Mexico.”
