Sha-Carri Richardson went viral after she ripped off her orange wig to reveal her braids, as she was known, ahead of Friday’s finale.
The move caused a startled cheer and laughter from the stadium crowd, but Sha-Carri’s expression never looked serious. After making her move, Sha-Carri loaded into the blocks. And after a slow start to the race, the track and field star stormed toward the championship, sprinting another 100 meters while raising his fist in the air.
A former NCAA champion, Richardson’s talent has never been questioned. Her consistency was.
But maybe she’s turned things around. This year she has run seven 100cc races and they have all been under 11 seconds. That string of races, and the way she controlled them all at Eugene, begs the question of who will win at August’s World Championships in Hungary when Richardson faces the best in the world.
In 2020, a failed drug test cost Sha’Carri the spot she secured at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, and she failed to advance past the first round at the US Track and Field Championships last year.
