Shanghai Emerges From Covid-19 Lockdown, Revels in the Mundane

SINGAPORE — Residents gathered outside the gates of some Shanghai gated communities late Tuesday to stage a countdown to midnight, when the city government lifted anti-Covid-19 restrictions they had holed up in their homes — in many cases for more than two months.

Shortly after the deadline, a convoy of cars emerged from the gates of a complex, honking their horns and sporting national flags over their bonnets, videos circulating on social media showed. Passengers could be seen sticking their heads out of sunroofs. Firecrackers twinkled the night sky as a festive mood invaded the city after weeks of chaos, frustration and growing despair.
