All year, the Phoenix Suns were selected to represent the Western Conference in the NBA Finals.
Their 64 wins in the regular season are much higher than the rest of the competition and they look like they’re on their way to finding redemption for the lack of titles.
In a rather shocking turn of events, the Suns playoff run ended prematurely. They failed to make it through to the second round as Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks advanced to the Western Conference finals.
Having Game 7 on their home turf, the Phoenix Suns had everything for them. That is, until the game starts. Dallas took the lead and never looked back. It ended up being one of the ugliest losses in NBA history.
Phoenix has never been on top in the game and at one point, they were down to 46. After such a bad performance in a big game, FS1’s Shannon Sharpe has left the Suns, stating:
“You know the old saying ‘you picked the wrong day to have a bad day at the office,’ and they picked the worst day to fight shooting basketball, and the Mavericks put it all together.”
Sharpe was noticed in his assessment. No one at the Suns could make a difference in the 7th half. Devin Booker played 37 minutes and shot as far as 21.4%, scoring 11 points from 14 attempts to score.
Where will the Phoenix Suns go from here?
After such an ugly exit from the post-season, the Phoenix Suns have to ask themselves, where are they going from here?
One thing they do is that most of the staff will be signed for next season, so getting back running won’t be too difficult. Their biggest decision will be what to do with starting center Deandre Ayton when former number one pick gets into free agency.
While much of the core is young, Chris Paul significantly influences the Suns’ chances of a dispute. Now at 37, one has to wonder how much he can give to a team.
The future Hall of Fame point guard led the league in assists per game, but has his limitations in other areas. Paul has stated that he has no intention of retiring at this point.
Looking ahead, the Western Conference will only get better. Phoenix will have to find a way back if they want one more shot at the NBA title.
