Shazam 2 Star Addresses Critics’ Negative Reviews (Exclusive)

Shazam! wrath of the gods Star Marta Milans reacted to the film’s slow theatrical release and gave several reasons, including “Hators on the Internet.”

Opening for one of the worst starts in DC history, Shazam! 2 grossed just $30.1 million domestically during its three-day opening weekend. That’s $23.4 million less than in 2019 Shazam! and $36.9 million behind 2022 Black Adam Opening.

A big part of the poor commercial opening is the equally negative reception from critics. The original was well reviewed, earning a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes wrath of the gods is currently at a lazy 51%.

Mama Rosa actress Marta Milans believed part of the reason for the negative reactions was due to politics.

Shazam! Star on critics’ agendas influencing reviews

The direct picture

In an exclusive conversation with The Direct, Shazam! wrath of the gods Actress Marta Milans reacted to the negative reception of the latest DCU. The star believed “There’s a lot of politics involved” and there is one “Political Agenda” among critics:

“I know there’s a lot of politics involved and a lot of hardcore fans on one side and a lot of haters on the internet on the other. A lot of critics feel like they have a political agenda instead of actually sitting and sitting and watching the film and enjoying it.”

While she expressed her frustration, Milans made it a point to explain Shazam 2 is not “try to push every agenda” and questioned the idea “that party fun is not good enough:”

“We’re not trying to push an agenda. We’re not trying to prove any point. And I don’t know what the point is, I don’t know if it’s our society these days where having fun isn’t good enough. A movie, that means you just go and feel good about it, and you have a lot of laughs, and you see the Shazamily, that seems good enough for some people.

Milans remains hopeful of a possible third film due to the franchise “special story” And “feeling good:”

“So I hope that doesn’t have anything to do with decision making in the future. I think it’s a special story that touched a lot of parts around the world and I think that’s one of the reasons the first film was so successful and we were able to do a second one. And I just hope that word of mouth and feel good will continue to be passed around the world. And let’s keep our fingers crossed for a third one. Who knows?”

Marta Milans Explains Shazam’s Checkout Issues! 2

A lot has changed since the release of the first film in 2019, particularly in terms of moviegoing trends following the COVID-19 pandemic. Marta Milans is very aware, to put it bluntly, “I think fewer people are going to the cinemas after COVID. It’s just a sad reality.”

The actress described this as “simply sad reality” and partially attributed that to why the Shazam! Sequel deserves less than the original.

Milans also addressed the catchphrase of “Superhero Fatigue”, but found that the exhaustion mostly comes from the critics, not the fans. She specifically mentioned reading “Unnecessary hate comments” out of “trolls” Opening weekend release:

“I don’t know if there’s a superhero fatigue, there might be, it’s clear there’s a superhero fatigue in the world of critics where there are all these trolls just making some unnecessary hate comments so inappropriate that I should stop reading it over the weekend because I was like, guess what? It’s simply not worth it.”

The bottom line is Shazam! 2 will (probably) not count as a success in the eyes of Warner Bros. Discovery executives. Milans seem to understand that, he says “Nobody does it for the love of art” but she doesn’t care what the critics have to say:

“I don’t care how many critics say one thing, how many reviews, how many box office numbers, it’s understandable that these big films of this magnitude are bound to hit the box office because they cost a lot of money to make. That’s just one Fact. And at the end of the day, this is a business. Nobody does it for the love of art. They do it because they need to make money. I get that.”

Shazam! wrath of the gods is now playing in theaters worldwide.
