Sheikh Khalifa, Who Oversaw U.A.E.’s Stark Transformation, Dies at 73

DUBAI — Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan, the second president of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Abu Dhabi, who stays out of the limelight even as he oversees the dramatic transformation of the land country, passed away. He was 73 years old.

Sheikh Khalifa came to power in 2004 following the death of his father, the founder of the UAE, but has fallen ill in recent years. He underwent surgery after suffering a stroke in 2014 and is believed to be stable, but has rarely been made public since.
