‘Should not cost part of their soul’: Free food hubs are open 24/7 in King, Pierce counties

Nine free food centers in Pierce and King counties are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

SPANAWAY, Wash. — One woman is working to make sure people feel comfortable and respected when they receive food assistance in Pierce and King Counties.

While the pantry located in an area parking lot, such as in Spanaway, may look out of place, their goal is to make people feel like they belong.

There are nine free food centers across Pierce and King counties run by Angel Swanson and Feeding Feasible Feasts. They are always stocked and unlocked.

“We go through a mall in a day, maybe 100 to 120 loaves of bread,” says Swanson.

The centers are open seven days a week, 24 hours a day and are open to anyone. The center in Spanaway serves more than 100 visitors per day. Since the centers are not staffed, the doors have devices that count the number of times they are opened.

“So the idea here is just to try to establish as much of this as possible in communities that desperately need it,” says Swanson.

Angel Swanson knows how important it is to have food available to families, because she herself has desperately needed it.

“When I first came to this state, I went to the food bank once a week, I had seven kids,” says Swanson.

Swanson knows that food must not only be readily available, but also accessible.

“I had to bring all of my kids,” Swanson says of the time when she had to go to the grocery store. “I don’t have a car, so we took the bus and walked a bit because my husband has his only car.”

The goals of the centers are to promote dignity and reduce stigma, but also to bring our society to a place where food is available to all.

“People are starving and they need support with food and they shouldn’t lose part of their soul to get it,” Swanson said.
