SNL’s cold open pokes fun at Merrick Garland and the hunt for classified documents

SNL‘s Cold Open had the cast on the hunt for the infamous “Secret Government Documents”. Don’t worry, US Attorney General Merrick Garland (Mikey Day) is on the case.
This weeks live on saturday night, Hosted by actor Michael B. Jordan, the comedic forces were joined by cast members Day, Kenan Thompson, Ego Nwodim and Bowen Yang, who take to the press podium to spread an unspoken truth about government officials past and present: They are everything somewhat incompetent.

Underscored by humorously timed whip-cracking sounds reminiscent of the big TV procedures of the past, Day plays a shaky but determined Garland. “I may look like I was born in a library, but there’s something you should know: Merrick Garland doesn’t act.”
However, the sketch ended with a more serious message: justice for the Memphis police killing of Tire Nichols. “When we’re done playing with these little papers,” says Thompson’s character, “we’re going to go to Memphis and make sure justice is done there, too, right?” Day’s Garland replies, “I sincerely hope so .”
