Sony earlier this year improved its already outstanding WH-1000XM4 headphones and introduced the successor, the WH-1000XM5. The new cans make just about everything about the previous model a little bit better, putting it in a class of its own — and its $398 price tag reflects that. But now you can snag the XM5 for about $60 less than usual thanks to a one-day sale at Woot that drops the black model to $340. That’s the best price we’ve seen since the headphones came out in May.

Sony has made some subtle changes to the XM5’s design. Compared to the XM4, the new headphones have a slimmer headband and an overall more modern look. They weigh only slightly less than their predecessor, but feel a lot lighter when worn, which should make wearing them for long hours even more comfortable.

Somehow Sony managed to make the XM5’s sound quality and active noise cancellation even better. The headphones feature new 30mm carbon fiber drivers that handle audio that’s well-tuned for a variety of genres and has better depth and clarity. ANC has been improved thanks to additional processors and overall microphones that help detect and block out noise. Overall, the XM5 is better at blocking out things like nearby voices and TV noise than its predecessor.

The XM5 also works with Sony’s companion mobile app, which lets you change settings and do things like enable multipoint connectivity, change voice assistants and more. As far as battery life goes, you get about 30 hours before you need to charge it, and it only takes three minutes to get three hours of playtime. Make no mistake, Sony’s WH-1000XM4s are still great headphones (which you can often find on sale too), but the XM5 cans are the ones to go for if you want the latest features and some of the best ANC features. found on over-ear headphones.
