South Jersey family of eight gets Hometown Heroes makeover

SICKLERVILLE, NJ (WPVI) — “They’re always looking for foster homes,” Chuck Sweeney said. “They always need support, whether it’s a permanent position or a temporary placement.”

Sweeney and his wife Grace learned this from experience. After having two biological children of their own, they wanted a third.

“We decided to nurture them and start adopting them,” he said. “And we wanted another one, and the next thing we knew we had six.”

That makes a family of eight (plus a mother-in-law) living under one roof. And for a while, her house needed a new back door, repainted walls, and a room that could be repurposed for an extra bedroom.

“Our main concern is time to care for special needs with two of our children,” said Grace Sweeney. “And we needed a little help getting some work done.”

Sweeney heard about Hometown Heroes for Special Needs on social media and reached out. Its founder, Scott D’Antonio, thought they would be good for a day of service.

“I’ve used my contract business to help families, whether that’s doing day service or doing repairs,” D’Antonio said. “I said perfect, let’s see what we can do. we will work together I’ll get everyone and we’ll do as much as we can.”

Within hours, the Sweeneys said parts of their home were unrecognizable.

“I couldn’t be more grateful. I didn’t expect them to put in so much work,” said Chuck Sweeney. “He brought his whole crew and it doesn’t cost us anything.”

The transformative work is only made possible by donations and volunteers. To learn more about Hometown Heroes for Special Needs and how you can get involved, visit their website.
