When it was announced that the main villain the Into the Spider-Verse Consequence D-List Spidey would become the spot, many people shrugged at the thought Someone who looks like a walking Dalmatian zoot suit with portal powers could pose a major threat to Miles and his fantastic friends. But that’s the point.

“I like the villains best when they reflect the hero’s journeys – sort of a dark mirror of the protagonist, and I think Spot is no different,” said producer Phil Lord Weekly entertainment in a new interview. “He wants to be seen as legitimate. He’s a character who has a silly costume and isn’t always considered the best Spider-Man foe, but like all of us, he wants to be taken seriously.”

The Spot, voiced by Jason Schwartzman in the film, was first introduced in the comics in late 1984, where his distorting powers – acquired through a Laboratory accident while attempting to recreate the powers of Another Hero, Cloak – Allowed him to transfer himself and parts of his body through space-time via portals to the “Spotworld”. But it sounds like in Across the Spider-Verse Spot receives a minor modification to his powers, which now allows him to travel through all dimensions of the multiverse – making him a threat not just to Miles, but to Miles as well every spider hero around.

But in addition to his portal suit powers, which are good for the experiential animation of the spider verse Filming the spot’s quest for recognition as a counterpoint to Miles’ own struggle to define himself as he grows up. “When [Miles is] As he grows up he’s trying to figure out how to go out and see the world, spread his wings and get out of the nest,” added Chris Miller. “But he also feels rooted to his homeland and family. It’s the push-pull of your teenage life where you think, ‘How do I manage to be my own person while not losing where I come from?’”

Part of this lesson will be learning how to beat up a man portalseemingly between dimensions ling. No doubt we’ll learn more before then and see more of the spot in action Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hits theaters on June 2, 2023.
