SR 2 closed both directions at Stevens Pass due to wildfire

SKYKOMISH, Wash. – Both directions State Route 2 was closed at Stevens Pass between Index and Skykomish until further notice due to wildfire risk.

The Bolt Creek fire near Grotto and Skykomish has burned at least 20 acres so far and was first reported Saturday morning, according to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

Soldiers from the Washington State Patrol, Snohomish County and King County Sheriff’s Deputies are helping to evacuate the area.

The Washington State Department of Transportation said the exact location of SR 2’s closure is subject to change.

The area north of SR 2 between Skykomish and Baring is on Level 2, meaning people should be ready to evacuate immediately.

Due to warm, dry and windy conditions expected across the region, most of western Washington is on a red flag warning through Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the Cascades, the Olympics and most of the lowland areas of western Washington will be hot, dry and windy.

The warning went into effect for most areas of the Puget Sound lowlands and Olympic Peninsula on Friday noon and is scheduled to expire at midnight on Saturday, the NWS said.

An air quality warning has been issued by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency as wildfire smoke wafts into the area.
