Staff At First Avenue Refuses To Work Sold Out Dave Chappelle Show

It looks like things have backfired massively for Dave Chappelle in the last 24 hours. Due to claims of transphobia, the entire staff at the First Avenue club in downtown Minneapolis walked out and refused to show up – even though the show was completely sold out!

Chappelle managed to do another show at The Varsity, another, smaller club with fewer seats, and even managed to sell out his audience (albeit for higher ticket prices), but according to a post on Twitter, the reasons were very good clear why this show had to be cancelled, the staff just didn’t have it. First Avenue has since released a statement on Twitter, which read:

First Avenue employees refuse to work at the sold-out Dave Chappelle Show

“The Dave Chappelle Show tonight has been canceled and is moving to the Varsity Theatre. To staff, artists and our community, we hear you and we are sorry. We know we must hold ourselves to the highest standards, and we know we will let you down. We’re not just a black box with people in it, and we understand that First Avenue isn’t just a space, it has meaning beyond our walls.

The First Avenue team and you have worked hard to make our venues the safest places in the country and we will continue on that mission.

We believe in diverse voices and freedom of artistic expression, but in acknowledging this we lost sight of the impact this would have. We know that some will disagree with this decision; You are welcome to send feedback. If you are a ticket holder, look for an email on your tickets that will be broadcast to the show at the Varsity Theater.

It seems like, at least from the First Avenue POV staff, no one is here for Dave Chapelle’s humor. It’s really a statement that this type of strike took place in the middle of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Perhaps Chapelle would just have better luck in red states? That would be an interesting comedy tour. Stay tuned!!! Staff At First Avenue Refuses To Work Sold Out Dave Chappelle Show
