Brittney Griner was released from Russian custody last week after the US exchanged Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for her freedom.
Stephen A. Smith commented on the developments.
“Very, very happy for Brittney Griner and her wife Cherelle,” Smith said on First Take. “Anyone involved in basketball knows how much Brittney Griner meant to the game. As American citizens, we are pleased to see her home, although we would fail to neglect the importance of Paul Whelan’s homecoming.”
The WNBA star and Olympic champion landed in San Antonio early Friday morning. She’s going to sleep soundly in her bed tonight. She has yet to speak to the public since her release.
Joe Biden released a statement on Griner’s homecoming.
“I’m happy to say that Brittney is in good spirits. She – she’s relieved to finally go home. And the fact remains that she lost months of her life, experienced needless trauma and deserves space, privacy and time with her loved ones to recover and heal from her time in unlawful detention,” he said.
“Brittney is an athlete like no other, a two-time Olympic gold medalist for Team USA. She endured abuse and a show—at a show trial in Russia, with characteristic harshness and incredible dignity. She represents the best of America – the best of America – down the line, everything about her.”
