Stephen Curry says Charles Barkley won’t finish in top 70 at American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament

Punters believe Charles Barkley is ready to put in his best performance at the American Century Championship Celebrity Golf Tournament. Stephen Curry disagrees.

Caesars Sportsbook is offering Barkley to finish in the top 70 of the field of 87 golfers this week in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Barkley finished last season in a tie in 76th place, his best showing at the tournament he competes in annually.

“No, hell no,” Curry said at a Thursday news conference when asked about Barkley’s chances of making the top 70. “Grab that, send it to him, make him play it on every tee.”

Bettors have more faith in Barkley. Caesars Sportsbook opened Barkley as a 5-1 underdog and finished in the top 70. As of Thursday, Barkley’s odds had improved to +260 with 96% of the bets on 95% of the money backing the NBA Hall of Famer among the best 70 to come.

The largest bet Caesars has made in the celebrity tournament, which begins Friday, is $2,000 if Barkley finishes in the top 70.

CBS analyst and former NFL quarterback Tony Romo, the favorite to win the tournament, said Barkley impressed him during a recent practice session on the driving range.

“He hit the ball really well,” Romo said on Thursday. “And he improved a lot last year, I thought. I’d bet he finishes in the top 70.”

Romo is the favorite at Caesars Sportsbook 3-1, followed by former tennis pro Mardy Fish 7-2. Former Major League Baseball pitcher John Smotlz is next at 9-2. Defending champion Vinny Del Negro, who defeated Smoltz in a playoff to win the tournament last year, is 7-1.

Former LPGA star Annika Sorenstam (17-2) has attracted the most bets and money at Caesars Sportsbook.

Stephen Curry is 12-1. His father Del Curry is 85-1 and his brother Seth Curry is 500-1.

Barkley, at 7,500-1, had attracted 10 bets to win the tournament, the largest being $10.
