Only legends were in the building for this week’s episode of “Saturday Night Live.”
Longtime friends and comedy partners Steve Martin and Martin Short returned to host Saturday’s show with musical guest Brandi Carlile and a key support from Selena Gomez, her “Only Murders in the Building” co-star. After crashing her castmates’ opening monologue, Gomez also made a cameo during one of the sketches.
At the helm of the NBC show, Martin, 77, and Short, 72, exchanged some humorous insults before embarking on a dramatic reading of fake eulogies they “accidentally” wrote for each other in advance.
“Marty, I dedicate this eulogy to you — wow, not a big turnout,” Martin joked. “Marty didn’t want to be cremated – too late – but I will always be haunted by Marty’s last words: Tesla Autopilot engaged.”
“There are so many great things I could say about Steve Martin, but it just doesn’t seem like the right time or place for that,” Short joked. “Steve, you boring, overrated, white-haired son of a… where have you gone? I know Steve is looking down on us right now because he’s always looked down on everyone.”
After lamenting that Short “had been taken from us too soon, but sadly not before playing Jack Frost in ‘The Santa Clause 3’,” Martin wondered who else he “could ever work with.”
“And me?!” Gomez interjected cheers from the studio audience, which drowned out the hosts’ reactions.
Gomez also later appeared in a parody of Martin and Short’s Father of the Bride film series, with a surprise appearance by Succession and original Father of the Bride cast member Kieran Culkin.
Between skits, Carlile performed “The Story” and “You and Me on the Rock” with Lucius. Next week’s episode of “Saturday Night Live” will be hosted by Austin Butler with musical guest Lizzo.
