Storm sends beach umbrellas flying into Atlantic Ocean off Bethany Beach, Delaware

BETHANY BEACH, Delaware (WPVI) — Umbrellas in Bethany Beach were blown into the sea as severe weather swept the Delaware coast on Friday.

Dramatic footage shows beachgoers caught in torrential rain as umbrellas roll over the raging surf.

Fortunatly nobody was hurt.

The National Weather Service issued multiple weather alerts for coastal Delaware on Friday.

“We still collect some of these umbrellas for them. We fish them out of the water,” said Joe Donnelly, captain of the Bethany Beach Patrol. “We usually ask people here at Bethany Beach if you don’t need your umbrella today, fold it down or don’t put it all the way up.”

Donnelly said they usually try not to prevent people from using umbrellas on the beach unless conditions become severe enough to hurt someone.

“When you go to go to the bathroom, have lunch, fold down your umbrella or take it off entirely. If you must be underneath, stay close enough to hold on to if necessary,” he said.
