Charles Johnson, a former first-round NFL draft pick and Super Bowl winner, has passed away at the age of 50. The sad news was confirmed Tuesday by North Carolina High School, where he was an assistant athletic director. He wrote in a tweet: “RIP Coach. You will be missed by so many, especially your husky family.”
The cause of death was not released.
Just a few picks after the Colts picked Marshall Faulk, Johnson was picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 17th overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft. Johnson went on to have a successful professional career. The 6-foot, 200-pound wide receiver spent nine seasons in the league, spending time with the Steelers, Eagles, Patriots and Bills. During his career, he rushed for 4,606 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Fans and friends remembered Charles on Twitter when he said: “REST IN PEACE. I was a freshman at Cajon High School in San Bernardino and he was a senior. That year was canceled (later hit out, if I remember correctly broke his leg), then of course he went on to Colorado and the rest is history. A great talent and person. He made our hometown proud.“, “Prayers and condolences to his family and friends in their time of need and deep understanding.” and “SSuch a genuine and kind person gone way too soon. Prayers for his family, friends and colleagues.”
Johnson was a member of the New England team that defeated Kurt Warners Rams in SB XXXVI in 2001, resulting in Tom Brady’s first-ever Super Bowl win.
After the 2002 season, he left the NFL.
We are thinking of his family and friends at this time and wish them the best.
