Sydney Sweeney’s Spider-Man Spin-off Movie Gains New Cast Member

Sony’s Marvel universe has gone through many ups and downs over the years, but the studio has remained consistent when it comes to introducing new characters into its own shared universe. One of those characters is Madame Web, a notable Spider-Man ally from Marvel Comics. Upcoming Madame Web the film will feature Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney as the two main stars, although Sweeney’s respective characters are still unknown.

Madame Web will be directed by television director SJ Clarkson. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but the character’s connection to the Web of Life and Destiny could trigger another Multiverse event involving Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire’s web surfer Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s friendly neighborhood hero.


Sony President Tom Rothman revealed that filming for Madame Web will start sooner rather than later, meaning other actors could be announced soon. Now, a new report has indicated that another actress has joined the upcoming Marvel adventure.

Ghostbusters Actress Joins Sony’s ‘Madame Web’

Variety shared that Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) joined the cast of Madame Webone of the upcoming movies in Sony’s Marvel Universe.

The outlet notes that O’Connor’s role remains unknown. The actress will join Dakota Johnson (Fifty shades of gray) and Sydney Sweeney (Happiness) in the Spider-Man spin-off.

In Marvel Comics, Madame Web is an elderly woman with a chronic autoimmune disorder that requires her to connect to a spider web-like life support system.

Who will Celeste O’Connor play in ‘Madame Web’?

While Variety did not give any specifics about Celeste O’Connor’s role in Madame Webthere are several options about who the actress will play in the movie.


It was previously reported that Marvel Studios originally wanted Zendaya to be a superhero, but the studio ultimately scrapped the idea. Fans have theorized that There’s no way home the actress could have portrayed the superhero Jackpot in the MCU, especially after seeing Tom Holland’s reaction when the subject was brought up.

Sony could still introduce Jackpot down the line, but Madame Web can be considered as a golden opportunity due to the film’s stacked female cast. O’Connor could make his Marvel debut as the Jackpot in the film, thus reinforcing the interconnected storylines of the characters in Sony’s Marvel universe.


If O’Connor is actually playing Jackpot, how the character fits into the story is another topic entirely. Although the character has no connection to Madame Web, a post-credits nib similar to what Morbius did with Michael Keaton’s Vulture is entirely possible.

Other roles O’Connor could play are an original character tied to Dakota Johnson’s Mdame Web or Sydney Sweeney’s character, or Ghostbusters the actress could finally play Julia Carpenter aka Spider-Woman.

Madame Web will hit theaters on June 7, 2023.
