Tacoma man shot and killed in homicide

TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma authorities are investigating the death of a man in a suspected homicide Thursday morning.

The Tacoma Police Department was called to a shooting in the 1500 block of St. Paul Avenue just before 10:30 a.m. Police found a 42-year-old man with a gunshot wound and took him to hospital. He died in hospital from his injuries, police said.

The police are investigating what led to the alleged homicide.

Officials did not provide details about the suspect.

Homicides have increased in Tacoma this year compared to previous years. Officials said Tacoma had an average of 18 homicides a year, but as of early July this year, Tacoma already had at least 24 homicides. That number was an increase of more than 118% compared to the same point in 2021.

Tacoma Police Chief Avery Moore unveiled his plan to reduce crime in the city in July. The first phase will focus on additional patrols in city “hot spots”. The second focuses on violent offenders through local and state partnerships. The third phase encourages community engagement.
