In conversation with complex In October 2022, weeks before his death, Takeoff stated that Migos’ success is due to him, Quavo and Offset being family. “It’s quite difficult to find two people who are also family like Unc and Phew. They’re usually going to try to put people together and it doesn’t work that way because they don’t fit,” Takeoff said. Quavo added: “For us, it was really family that made us strong. Sometimes you don’t have strong artists and it’s hard for all three artists to be superstars [in a group]. And then over time some of that shit falls off and there’s just one superstar left and then they’re gone.” Quavo also told Complex that Takeoff is Migos’ secret weapon for their music. “On many Migos records [Takeoff] would anchor the song,” Quavo said. “Now he comes on a lot of these albums and walks away. We form alley-oops like Trae Young and John Collins!” Quavo also explained his and Takeoff’s respective roles in recording music. “Just the various famines we’re having right now, to be in a state where we can be comfortable. Takeoff and I understand that this is a mission that we must complete. And then we come together and interlock our skills: me melodic and Take aggressive [with bars]. We’ve done that a lot on this album where I’m on the hook and take comes first,” he said. Takeoff added, “Like he said, I do some melodic stuff. Even Quavo, he usually does the melodic stuff and I rap more but we’re going back to basics.”

How did Takeoff die? Takeoff, whose real name was Kirsnick Khari Ball, was shot and killed in the early morning of November 1, 2022 on the doorstep of 810 Billiards & Bowling in Houston, Texas. He was 28 years old. TMZ reported that Takeoff and his bandmate and uncle Quavo were at the bowling alley playing dice when a fight broke out and someone opened fire and shot Quavo in or near the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Houston Police Department reported at a news conference at the time that two other people at the party were shot dead and taken in private vehicles to a local hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries.” They were a 23-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman. “Both will be fine,” Quavo wasn’t hurt.

“At 2:34 a.m. this morning, officers received a call that a shootout was in progress. Officers arrived there shortly after – a downtown location, Billiards & Bowling Alley. They came across a deceased man. This man was identified as Kirshnik Ball, better known as Takeoff. He’s a member of the Atlanta rap group Migos,” Houton Police Chief Troy Finner said at the news conference. He continued, “I’ve received a lot of calls in and out of Houston. And everyone was talking about what a great young man this is, how peaceful he is. What a great artist.”

Houston Police Sergeant Michael Arrington added: “A private party was booked for the event – after that ended, a large group of people gathered in the front door area outside the building, leading to an argument as to where the shooting took place the disagreement,” he said. “Many of the people who were there fled the scene and didn’t stay to testify. We ask that you either call us at Homicide or, if you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers. We are currently searching for information – videos, information. We need all of you to send us these so we can resolve this case. We look for everything that helps us. We want to find justice for this family.”

In the tone of the 911 call received by TMZ, emergency dispatchers could be heard discussing the incident and reporting that five shots were fired and that the caller heard gunshots and people screaming. In video of the shooting posted by TMZ, Quavo could also be heard on the phone with an ambulance when a woman at the scene, who said she was a nurse, helped with the launch. “What must she do?” said Quavo.

At the press conference, Chief Finner revealed that Takeoff’s mother, sister of his Migos member Quavo, flew to Houston immediately after his death. “I spoke to this young man’s mother just an hour ago – she flew in from out of town. I want everyone to understand the pain, the suffering of a mother. Very hard,” said Finner. “And I told her if we stand with every victim of violence or murder, their family, we stand with them in this city, in this police department. I would like to thank our homicide squad, led by Commander Spears, for their amazing work over and over again.” He continued, “I ask that we all pray for his mother, his family and all of his friends who are still in great pain and shock stand. We have no reason to believe he was involved in anything criminal at the time. Peaceful, loving, great entertainer.”

Chief Finner also took a moment to comment on the hip-hop community, explaining that the community has a “bad reputation” due to the number of rappers that have been killed in recent years. “I know and respect a lot of great people in our hip-hop community,” he said. “I’m calling everyone, every hip-hop artist in Houston and across the country. We must monitor ourselves. We all have to stand together and make sure nobody tears this industry down.”
