To illustrate this point, real estate platform ZeroDown analyzed its data on home listings across 20 metropolitan areas in the United States to determine the most expensive neighborhood in each, based on homes sold between March 18, 2022 and April 18, 2022. Neighborhoods are ranked by median home price per square foot.

The major cities chosen for this list range from those famous for their modest historic bungalows to those famous for their expensive zip codes. Some represent large increases in home prices, such as the formerly affordable city of Phoenix, which has led the nation in home price growth for 33 consecutive months since April 2022. In particular, downtown Phoenix saw a price increase of nearly 30% between March 2021 and 2022.
