Instant messaging app Telegram has surpassed 700 million monthly active users and is celebrating by launching a premium subscription tier.

Telegram Premium, teased by CEO Pavel Durov earlier this month, invites users to unlock exclusive features like faster downloads, additional stickers and reactions, improved chat management, etc. while existing features remain free for everyone. “Contributions from Premium subscribers will help improve and expand the app for decades to come, while Telegram remains free and independent, upholding its user-centric values ​​and redefining how a tech company works,” reads a blog announcement (Opens in a new window).

Pricing hasn’t been officially announced, but TechCrunch believes (Opens in new window) that it will range from $4.99 to $6 per month.

Premium features include 4GB uploads (from 2GB) and unlimited storage in Telegram Cloud. You don’t need a membership to download particularly large documents, although it would be handy now that premium users can download media at their network’s “fastest possible speed.” Telegram Premium also has twice the app limits, allowing subscribers to follow 1,000 channels (500 free), create up to 20 chat folders (10 free) each with up to 200 chats (100 free), and add a fourth account. Pin 10 chats to the main list and save up to 10 favorite stickers.
