The 10 Best Windows 10 Themes for Every Desktop

A surprising number of Windows users do not change their desktop background. Don’t believe us? Just look over a few people’s shoulders the next time you’re at a coffee shop or airport.

And of those who change their screens, too many stick with one of the OS’s built-in images. It’s boring.

Instead, why not spruce up your desktop with a system-wide Windows theme? Here are the best Windows 10 themes for every desktop.

We think it’s fair to say that dark themes for Windows 10 look the best. And, as an added benefit, dark themes can help reduce eye strain.

There are so many dark themes out there that it can be hard to pick a winner, but we like GreyEve. You can get the ZIP file from DeviantArt. Put the file in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Themes then go to Settings > Personalization > Themes and select it from the list.

We have covered a lot of other dark themes for Windows 10 if you don’t like the GreyEve Theme.

It is true that there is not much difference between a dark theme and a black theme. However, the Dark Aero Hover Theme uses more black and less gray than the GreyEve Theme.

Before using the theme, you need to install UXThemePatcher For Windows 10 and/or 11. Once it’s up and running, get a copy of the theme from DeviantArt.

MAKE A VIDEO OF THE DAY

When the download is complete, move the contents of the Themes folder into %windir% / Resources / Themes. You can apply the theme to your system from Setting application.

3. HD Themes for Windows 10: 3D Themes

The 3D theme, available on ThemePack, contains 17 high definition wallpapers. All wallpapers give the illusion of a 3D graphic.

The images are all abstract; although some of them are inspired by spheres and cubes.

To use 3D Themes, put the files in %windir% / Resources / Themes. You can use all 17 images at once; right click on your desktop and select Next screen background to cycle through the options.

If you think the Windows layout is too cluttered, check out the Simplify 10 theme. It is one of the best Windows 10 themes. The theme removes a lot of unnecessary design elements, leaving you with an impressively sleek looking minimalist theme.

Simplify 10 comes in four different versions — a colorful theme, a light theme, a dark theme, and a third option called Maverick. The Maverick theme is designed to be similar to the Linux distribution, Ubuntu.

5. Windows XP Themes for Windows 10: XP Themes

Windows XP lives a long time in memory.

Of course, you still shouldn’t use the operating system for your day-to-day computing work. Support ended a long time ago, and it was a security nightmare. However, you can still make Windows 10 look like XP — it’s the best of both worlds for XP enthusiasts.

The best option is XP Themes on DeviantArt. Just make sure you install the latest version of UxStyle before proceeding with the setup.

6. Mac Theme for Windows 10: macDock

The most famous aspect of the macOS operating system is the dock. It provides quick access to all your frequently used apps. The Windows taskbar works the same way, but if you’re craving the Mac feel, you should probably give macDock a try.

As the name suggests, it adds a Mac-like dock to the bottom of your screen. It will replace the existing taskbar and you can customize the toolbar to show the apps you want to see.

Better yet, it also comes with a bunch of ready-to-use Mac apps, including Widgets, Launchpad, Siri, Finder, and Exposé. It even has three skins and a drag and drop interface.

Grab the installation files from DeviantArt and run the EXE file to get started.

7. Anime Windows 10 Themes: Many

Anime, in all its forms, seems to be becoming more and more popular every day; Netflix has made a ton of Anime originals, which you can stream on Amazon Prime, and there are a ton of nearly endless resources that will teach you how to draw in an anime style.

Therefore, it is perhaps not surprising to know that you can find a wide variety of anime themes for Windows 10. On ThemePack you can get themes for all your favorite stars and shows, including including Gintama, Vegeta, Evangelion and Haikyuu.

8. Best Microsoft Store Theme: Meteor Showers

You can find some of the best Windows 10 themes by downloading them for free in the Microsoft Store. There are dozens to choose from (including some paid options).

One of our favorite free themes in the store is Meteor Showers. It has 18 images of shooting stars for you to choose from, or you can have Windows cycle through all 18 images at predefined intervals.

Some of the other subjects featured in the photo include forests, cityscapes, lakes, and animals.

As the name suggests, Flattastic removes color gradations and other design elements that give the impression of curvature and replaces the entire screen with a flat interface.

There are 16 different versions of the theme — eight light designs and eight dark designs. You will have access to all 16 when you paste the appropriate files in C:\Windows\Resources\Themes.

10. Linux Themes for Windows 10: Ubuntu SkinPack

We’ve already looked at how to make Windows look like macOS, but what about making Windows look like Linux? If you want Windows functionality with a Linux look, check out Ubuntu SkinPack.

In addition to Windows 10, Ubuntu SkinPack also supports Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Note: Before changing your Windows 10 theme…

Whenever you change your Windows 10 theme, you should always make sure that you match the Windows accent color to your desktop background. It will make your theme seem more cohesive.

Fortunately, this process can be automated. Towards Settings > Personalization > Colors > Choose your color and tick the checkbox next to Automatically pick an accent color from my background.
