The 11 Best Apps to Animate Photos on Android and iPhone

GIFs and videos are the mainstay of social networking. It’s rare to see a still photo online these days and the fact that you can easily add motion effects and filters to your photos has seen the rise of these animated photos online.

So what if you want to animate a still photo, adding motion to a still moment? Well, there’s an app for that. In fact, there are many applications for that. Here are the best apps that you can use to animate photos on Android and iPhone.

1. Motion Map

Motionleap is the first app on our list, and for good reason. The app is one of the highest rated, with over 300,000 ratings in the Play Store, averaging over four stars.

Motionleap is free to use, although there is also a Pro version and a subscription version. Unlike many other animation tools, it does not create a watermark on your image when you download it to your phone.

The main purpose of the application is to animate still images and turn them into short, looping videos. You do this by programming directional cues into your image by dragging your thumb across the screen. You can also freeze parts of an image and apply filters on top of the image to create an atmosphere within your image.

Unfortunately, Motionleap saves your animations in video format unless you pay for a Pro account. So, if you are looking for a way to convert animations to GIFs, here’s how to convert videos to GIFs.

2. Werble

Werble works just like Motionleap. Its main purpose is to animate your photos, and although the basic account is free, in-app purchases are also available. Most of Werble’s animations are done through filter effects that you can add on your photos.

One advantage of Werble is that it automatically saves these photos as GIFs so they’re ready to use online. Defect? To remove the watermark it places on your images, you need to pay. That watermark is definitely big enough to be annoying.

You probably know GIPHY as the big search engine for all things GIF-related.

The premier place to upload and find meme reactions to anything under the sun, GIPHY also has a mobile app. It allows you to create GIFs and create your own animations. You can upload them using the platform’s built-in animation tools.

We really love GIPHY because of its easy to use and intuitive interface. It includes a sticker maker (available for iPhone X and later) and you can also add captions to your animations or record your own short videos. GIPHY is totally worth a try.

4. ImgPlay

ImgPlay is another app you can use to animate photos. Think of it like a mashup between Motionleap and Werble. It creates web-ready animations and has advanced, easy-to-understand controls. Unfortunately, it also sticks a watermark on your images — a watermark that you can’t remove unless you upgrade to a full account.

In ImgPlay, creating animations and GIFs can be done in a number of different ways. You can arrange still images side by side, using a continuous photo or a video.

5. Movepic

Movepic is similar to Motionleap in that it animates photos, but a large part of this animation can be accomplished using its built-in overlays and filters.

The downside is that you can’t remove the watermark without upgrading to a VIP account. Movepic also automatically saves your photos as movie files instead of GIFs. Even so, it’s still worth checking out.

6. StoryZ

Despite its boring interface, StoryZ is one of the best apps on this list. It works with still photos to animate them, and it does this through motion paths, color filters, and programmed overlays — a lot of which are free and really cool. . It also automatically saves your files as GIFs.

One of the best things about StoryZ is that you can remove the watermark from your images if you just watch a quick ad before saving the file. This is definitely a keeper if you want to animate photos.

7. Photo Bender

Photo Bender is an Android-specific application that allows you to digitally bend your images to create animations. You can even animate your own face. You do this by coloring your image, bending, stretching it, and using brushes. Once done, you can export your photos as MP4, GIF, JPEG, and PNG.

While this app doesn’t have as many ratings as some of the others on this list, it is highly rated, so it’s still worth a look.

There’s a reason why VIMAGE won a Google Play award in 2018. It can create some really cool animated images in just a few taps. There are tons of filters, animations and sounds to choose from to bring your photos to life.

Want to change the sky in your photo into sunny clouds? No problem. You don’t even need to select the sky because VIMAGE automatically detects and replaces it for you.

Like most of these apps, you need to pay to remove the watermark, get access to a full library of effects, and the ability to export your images at resolutions up to 2560p.

9. Zoetropic

If you want to animate your photos within minutes, Zoetropic is for you. While its feature list isn’t as extensive as the other apps we’ve mentioned, it does the job and it does it well.

To get started, you select your photo, then define a point of motion. Next, you stabilize or cover the areas you want to keep still. Finally, you choose your animation and overlay. You can also add tags and change colors.

Unfortunately, the number of effects you can access on the free account is quite limited. However, you may be able to find what you’re looking for if you need a quick way to animate an image.

10. Lumyer

Lumyer allows you to add hundreds of different effects to your photos to animate them. Whether you want subtle or sparkling weather effects, seasonal animations for Halloween and Christmas, or panoramic changes like appearing on a roller coaster, Lumyer can do it.

Note however: paying to remove the watermark does not give you access to all effects. There are many in-app purchases to compete with. If you agree with that, Lumyer is a good choice, but if not, you might like one of our other animation app recommendations.

11. Perfect YouCam

The last app on our list is YouCam Perfect, which allows you to apply loads of fun animations to your photos across multiple categories like sparkle, love, sports, and summer. You can adjust the speed and length of the animation and export as a video, GIF, or in perfect shape for Instagram or Facebook.

While YouCam Perfect works well for occasional use, upgrading to the premium version will be difficult for you. Many animations are locked behind a fee wall and you can only save/export two edited photos per day.
