Anyone who hasn’t been fascinated to the point of obsessing over Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie by the on-set paparazzi photos of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken should be fully won over by the raucous, ‘2001’-quoting teaser trailer be. Details about the film’s actual story are still scarce, but from the images available so far, and knowing that the screenplay was co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, all indications are that this is a scintillating subversion of gender and identity acts. Featuring a jam-packed supporting cast that includes Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Hari Neff, Rhea Perlman, Emerald Fennell, Kingsley Ben-Adir and many more, if any, die Expectations are perhaps too high now that this film could be the funniest and smartest film ever based on an old brand of plastic children’s toys. —Markus Olsen
