The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards are upon us. In the words of this year’s nominee, VMAs veteran Taylor Swift: “Are you ready for this?”
On September 12th, silver statues of MTV moon people will be available for selection by a handful of today’s top musicians. Returning to New Jersey for the second year running, the annual ceremony is sure to be a night of bold performances, moving acceptance speeches and defining viral moments.
“Since last year’s hugely successful event, our goal has been to celebrate one of our biggest music nights with the Garden State’s incredible fans,” said Bruce Gilmer, Paramount’s president of musical talent, in a statement.
In the weeks leading up to this year’s awards ceremony, MTV announced the award winners and artists who will take the stage. Here’s everything we know so far.
Where is the show and how can I watch it?
The MTV Video Music Awards return to the Prudential Center on September 12 for the second straight year. This year’s show marks the third time the VMAs have been held at the Newark, New Jersey venue.
The VMAs will be broadcast live on MTV beginning at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Viewers can also stream the show on Paramount+.
Who is the host?
MTV has yet to announce who will be hosting the 2023 VMAs. Last year, the channel caused a stir by announcing a trio of presenters – LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow. Past hosts have included Katy Perry, Jack Black, Doja Cat and the show’s opening hosts Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd.
Who is nominated?
This year, women dominated the top VMA categories – Video of the Year and Female Artist of the Year. Swift and SZA, both contenders for the night’s grand prize, received eight and six nominations, respectively.
Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo and Sam Smith follow with five nominations each.
Other nominees include Ice Spice, Peso Pluma, Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar, Karol G and Blackpink.
MTV announced its first artist block on Tuesday. Nominees Demi Lovato, Karol G, Måneskin and Stray Kids are among the artists who will bring their music to the Prudential Center.
Additional artists will be announced shortly before the show.
