The San Mateo County coroner has identified six of the seven victims killed in Monday’s Half Moon Bay shooting.
The victims are identified as Zhishen Liu, 73, of San Francisco; Marciano Martinez Jimenez, 50, of Moss Beach; Qizhong Cheng, 66, from Half Moon Bay;
Aixiang Zhang, 74, from San Francisco; Jingzhi Lu, 64, from Half Moon Bay; and Yetao Bing, 43, whose whereabouts were unknown.
Jose Romero, a Mexican, was reported among the dead by Reuters, who spoke to his cousin Jose Juarez. His younger brother Pedro was also reportedly shot and is in the hospital.
“The seventh victim has been preliminarily identified; However, we are withholding the name pending positive identification and notification of next of kin,” said Coroner Robert J. Foucrault.
The coroner’s office has been working closely with the Mexican and Chinese consulates, as well as the FBI, to find ways to positively identify victims and locate and notify next of kin, Foucrault said.
At a Tuesday news conference, San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus said the “only known connection between the victims and the suspect is that they may have been employees,” and that the evidence gathered so far suggests that the shooting was likely an act of workplace violence.
Corpus also discussed some of the difficulties authorities encountered in identifying the victims.
“Because some of the victims were members of our migrant community, this presents a unique challenge when it comes to identifying and notifying next of kin,” Corpus said.
The names of the victims come as suspect Chunli Zhao is scheduled to be arraigned at the Redwood City Courts Hall on Wednesday afternoon. He faces multiple crimes, including seven counts of murder.
This is breaking news and will be updated as more information becomes available.
