Acolyte yes mystery since its inception. Two years ago, Lucasfilm announced a series created by Russian dolls co-creator Leslye Headland, calling it a “female-led series” that focuses on a part of the Star Wars timeline that we know little about. There are some casting moves, but nothing solid.
Finally, buried in a giant Vanity Fair article previews all upcoming Star Wars projects, since imminent (Obi-Wan Kenobi) to far (Rian Johnson’s trilogy), there is some news about Acolyte. And it could change Star Wars forever.
In the article, Headland describes Acolyte is “a mystery thriller” set about a century ago The Phantom Menace. That’s huge news, because previously we only knew the setting was “the last days of the Supreme Republic”. For Star Wars enthusiasts, a century before the prequel means that the series is set in 132 BBY or 132 years before the events of Star Wars. A new hopeStar Wars Year Zero timeline.
Legend is lost Is one Inverse series about the forgotten lore of our favorite stories.
Now here is the interesting part. In both the canon timeline and the non-canon Legends timeline, basically nothing remarkable happens in this timeframe. In fact, the Legends timeline calls the entire millennium before the Rise of the Empire the “Great Peace of the Republic”. So what will the conflict in this series be? It’s Star Wars, but there’s no war to explore.
We know the series will deal with the Sith. It will perhaps deal with the failure, though centuries ago, of Darth Bane establishing the Rule of Two, and what that means for an established Sith Order as opposed to a The Jedi were like priests, holier than you were during the Upper Republic.
This setup also means that some of the characters we know and love will be alive, like Yoda and even Chewbacca. But with a separate timeline and premise, we’ll most likely see a whole new cast set apart from the rest of the Star Wars TV series over a century. Basically, there is a completely blank medium for the minds behind this program to work.
No matter where the plot goes, it will change Star Wars forever. Since there is no history for this age, Acolyte could rewrite Star Wars, including the possibility of bringing elements of the canon into the norm through this gap in the continuum. Anything can happen. The possibilities are literally as endless as the universe itself.
